Recession or no, middle-class fashionistas are dressing fashion forward. Their determination to follow the latest trends is playing out in disparate ways - buying pricier but fewer haute style pieces, or opting for a wardrobe of reasonable facsimile knock-offs that won't strain the budget.

Food is scarce enough in Haiti, Indonesia and Afghanistan to cause rioting in those countries. Food is expensive enough everywhere, including the U.S., to cause consumers to worry about the future. Given the trends, how will we afford food in the future? Will there be enough food at any price? Will food riots come to my neighborhood market?

The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas.
